Iowa Photo Journal 12: Water

From Monday, here is the newest entry, albeit older photos than the last one, titled Water. Bek headed off to her class on foot without an umbrella, and shortly the rain started to pour down. I loaded the boys into the car and we tried to rescue her, but we never found her. She had made it to class by then. We went back to the house, and not long afterward the rain stopped. The boys then headed outside to play.

Iowa Photo Journal 11: Night Fountain

I've been a bit sick the last several days, but felt a bit better today. We decided to fulfill a promise of taking the boys to see the city fountain at night, and these are the photos from it, a mini photo journal entry titled, Night Fountain.

Incidentally, we also got an icecream at the icecream shop, Whiteys, which has great icecream, but I have to say, lousy shakes. I don't know if it is a midwest thing or not, but my shake wasn't really a shake, It was more like a Wendy's "Frosty" than a shake. It was so thick it was completley impossible to actually drink through a straw, and came with a spoon for obvious reason. After it had melted a lot it could finally be drunk through the straw, but by then it was all but gone. I guess it would work out if one of us walked into town, bought shakes and then walked them back - by then it would be more like a shake.

Last Breathed

Today was my birthday. Woohoo! For my birthday I got two of the best gifts possibly: Bek let me sleep in and Bek let me go to the Deadwood while she watched the kids! All I can say, after finally being able to try the pinball machines at the Deadwood is... do I really have to come home?

If the pins at Deadwood and everything else I've shown and talked about isn't enough for you, how about this: Berkeley Breathed was here, and he loved it. He loved it so much that he created numerous comic drawings detailing his love for the city which he gave to the public library and they have on display. And that public library is of course one of the things he loved so much, and it is pretty incredible. Of course so far all I've seen is the kids side of it, but wow. It's big, it's beautiful, it's comfortable, it has everything. Aside from books, music, videos and dvds, they have a train table, toys, a little slide, puzzles, listening and viewing stations, windows at kid-level, internet access computers, computers with kids games loaded on them, a gigantic stuffed Clifford, a story time room, and I'm sure other stuff I've missed. Oh, and it's right near that city fountain and the playground. Some of the kid-level windows look out to the playground area, and to the fountain beyond.

We also spent quite a long time at the fountain today. Emmett got really soaked. The boys took part in a group effort with other kids, putting their feet on top of the water jets to stop them, then simultaneously (at least trying to do so simultaneously) stepping off again to start them again. Oh, and we found out the other day that they also have lights in those jets so that they light up at night. They lights appear to move up the stream in pulses, and I guess down again, but it wasn't dark enough to see that then. I haven't seen it yet at night, but I promised Max that one night soon we'd let them stay up late so we could go see it in the dark.

Taco Bell

Actually, this isn't really much of a story. I wanted to go as just a simple, familiar meal. Bek did not. The boys like Taco Bell. We went. Emmett ate well (for him.) All was fine until I took Emmett to the bathroom. An employee went in before us. After he came out, we went in. The bathroom looked clean enough. It was time for Emmett to wash his hands and... no soap! I mean there was no soap dispenser at all, not just no soap in a dispenser. There once was a soap dispenser, but it was now gone. There was no backup supply of soap. After seeing that there was no soap, something told me to try turning on the hot water. I turned it on, let it run for about a 40 seconds and it was still cold as ice. So, no soap and no hot water in the mens room and male employees working the kitchen. In fact all the employees were male, at least that night. I looked toward the kitchen and something told me that this was not a concern for them. We won't be going back. Coincidentally, I was feeling sick last night and this morning, but I don't think it was related as it was a couple days after the visit to taco bell. So, that's the taco bell story. Not much to it, really. Sorry!

No Place Like Home Away From Home

It feels like home now. Today I got my first package in the Iowa City mail! It was a new rocket (to replace the one lost, though Bek doesn't understand why we'd need another if we already have another (that wasn't lost)). Well, we needed a new parachute for it, and besides, it's always better to have two rockets to launch, rather than just one. In addition to the rocket, some engines and supplies and one new parachute, I ordered another parachute as a backup in case of future parachute failure, plus one more that Max requested so they could use it with their toys. I put the first chute together tonight and tested it out with one of their mini-size rescue heroes. Oh... I can't wait to show it to them in the morning - they are going to love it! I wrapped up the chute and cord like it would be used in a rocket, hooked it to the rescue heroe's hand, and tossed him as high as I could into the air. It was, as Chick Hicks (from "Cars") would say, "a thing of beauty."

Our home mail situation is far less sublime. We haven't received any of our home mail, which was suppose to have been forwarded. We called the Catonsville office last week and they told us that it normally takes a week or so for it to start being forwarded, and that it should be arriving starting this week. Well, no mail yesterday, at least not that mail. We did get a card from Granny which was sent direct to the PO Box address. That was very exciting for Max. He carried the card all the way home. Anyway, I called the Catonsville post office again to inquire about the forwarding situation, and was put through to the woman who apparently handles this forwarding stuff. Well, she said she just got the application today! It seems she was out sick for a week. How can they have only one person who handles mail forwarding, such that when they are out you are just screwed? Moreover, why didn't they tell us last week that this one person, whom is the only one who does forwarding, was out sick? Oh well. I don't really care that much now - I got a package!

Speaking of the movie Cars (two paragraphs back)... that movie has become the obsession of note for Max and Emmett, and there is good coming from it. I have never seen Max getting so much exercise. They are constantly wanting to do "races". We tell them the starting the line and the finish, then "On your marks! Get set! Go!" and off they go. Sometimes we run with them. Then they want to do it again. And again. And again. When we say they can't do another one because we have to be going they get upset. They always want to walk everywhere instead of drive, because it means they'll be able to do races on the way! Max always wants to be Lightning McQueen, but Emmett likes to be different characters. Sometimes Lightning, sometimes Chick Hicks, occasionally The King, and sometimes Sally. When they both want to be Lightning we just have more than one. I give a running commentary on the race such as, "It's Lightning McQueen followed by Lightning McQueen and then Lightning McQueen", then finally, "And Lightning McQueen wins by a tongue!" They laugh and laugh. The third Lightning is me, incidentally.

Today we went to the pool at the City Park. It is a fantastic pool. It's huge, it's got two diving boards, one normal, one a high dive. It starts very shallow, which is great for young kids, and there's a separate wading pool too. It's also relatively inexpensive. It wasn't the best day to go to a pool as it was overcast, but still we managed to get Emmett in the pool more than he's ever been before and when it was over he didn't want to leave.

I love this place enough already, but now it's over the top. Pinball. Yes, good pinball can be found here. Well, I don't know yet for certain that the games are in good shape because so far I was only able to run in, see what they had, and run back out, but I found out from a member of our league that when they were here a number of years back, the owners of the "Deadwood" loved pinball. I checked it out and found four machines, one the latest (which is the first time I've seen it), two the near latest, and one somewhat older but a great one. It's a great lineup. I've every reason to believe that they games will be in great shape and I can't wait to get a chance to go play them. Unfortuantely, being a bar, it's not an entirely kid-friendly place. I may take the boys anyway. It wasn't terribly smokey, but it was a bit. I'm undecided. Their game lineup is better than anything you'll find on location back in Maryland, by a long shot, aside from enthusiasts homes.

Yesterday we heard our neighbors practicing/playing music. Let's just say that it's safe to say they are learning. Max turned to me at one point and said, "That music is weird." I told him I liked it. When they came out, Christina asked how they were and seemed apologetic, to which I tried to assure her that we love to hear people playing music! She was doing the singing, one of her roomates was playing keyboard. When he came out I asked if he was the keyboardist and upon confirming that, I mentioned that Max has expressed an interest in learning to play keyboard (piano). He said he'll teach Max everything he knows if we stop in some time. I asked Max if he wanted to do that. He appeared petrified. He was presuming that meant he'd have to go by himself. I assured him I would be there with him the entire time. Today Max asked when he was going to get his keyboard lesson, so I'm going to have to try to set it up soon.

So, that's a lot of topics in one message, but this trip tends to make it hard to keep up. I'm planning to take a bit of a hiatus on the photo journal. I want time to do other things. I completley enjoyed putting the photos out like that, but after a week and a half of it I'm wanting to slow it down substantially. So I wouldn't expect to see photos every day from now on.

Peanut Butter And Jelly Sadness

I didn't get to the days pictures yet and now I'm tired, so they'll have to get posted tomorrow night. I'll leave you with this, though....

For lunch Bek, Emmett and I had ham and cheese on rolls, and Emmett did quite well with it. Max requested and had peanut butter and jelly. After Bek and Emmett had finished and left the table, Max turned to me and told me that he felt sad. The reason proved to be that he wasn't eating what everyone else was eating. I asked him if wanted a ham and cheese sandwich and he said he wasn't sure he'd like it. I offered a bite of my sandwich. He carefully bit just the ham and roll. Once declaring the he liked that, he wanted to try a bite with the cheese too (swiss). Again he liked it! Then he said he wanted to try the whole thing, with tomato and lettuce. He liked it again! Then he asked that, if he finished his peanut butter and jelly, could he have a ham and cheese sandwich with lettuce and tomato too. I said yes, he ate his P&J, and I made him half a ham and cheese with lettuce, tomato and mayonaise. He didn't eat a lot of it, but I think he was just plenty full already. He looked a lot happier.

Unfortunately I left the ham out and now we have to throw it out, most of the pound we'd just bought. Bek and I were quite sad about that. Worse, tomorrow Max is going to be eating peanut butter and jelly again, but I suppose we will be too.

Iowa Photo Journal 8: Father's Day At City Park, Etc.

Yesterday's entry into the journal was delayed due to the internet service going south last night. We're back online this morning, so here you go... Father's Day At City Park, Etc. The better photos are by Max, of course.

Cars, (Air) Hockey, Soap and Tears

No photos today, folks.

We took the boys to the movies to see Cars. I would have taken them by myself, but we were a bit worried that one of them might get too scared and want to leave, so we both went, thus allowing for one to leave while the other could stay. I read up a bit on the movie in terms of its scaryness for kids, and found that there was a loud opening and closing, a nightmare scene which I seemed to recall involved two cars getting crushed by a car crusher (it proved to be two cars getting run over by a combine) and a non-nightmare scene involving the main character/car being chased by the combine.) I warned them about those scenes and told them I'd tell them when the nightmare scene was happening.

It proved to be a non-issue, as neither got too scared, and the opening and closing weren't too loud either (which might have been due to the theater). The guys completely loved the movie. As I tend to be unable to not pay attention to anything on TV or a movie screen (I see every kids show in detail, whether I want to or not), I also watched the film. It's a Pixar movie, so I'd want to see it anyway, but A Bug's Life was lousy, thus we know they can do wrong, and the early word I'd read was that this would be a "lesser" Pixar film. However I really enjoyed it too. I won't try to answer the question of whether or not this is better or worse than Toy Story/Toy Story 2 and others, I can just say that I found it thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish, and definitely to be a great, great kids movie. Not too scary (unlike a lot of kids movies nor like Finding Nemo), but still exciting, lots of humor for kids and adults, the usual well-developed pixar characters and incredible animation, etc. Certainly not disappointing and definitely worth seeing. I was completely sold on the film when we got to the scene involving Lightning going out with Mater at night. I won't say what happens because that would ruin it. It was perfect.

The movie theater was in the local mall, a fairly large one, that also features a full-size indoor ice rink. Aside from ice skating, they play pickup and league hockey. I'm thinking of taking the boys some day to watch the kids play hockey, and of course another time to actually try ice skating. Before the movie we had some time to kill so we went into the arcade (disappointingly pinball-free) and Max and Emmett played a game of air-hockey. Emmett won, 7 to 5. They thought it was fun. When we headed to the theater there was a stop to study the movie poster in detail. Max, Emmett and some other boys studied it, and one boy who'd seen the movie, pointed out and told them who all the characters were. After the movie we went to the other end of the mall where they had a "soft play area". On the way the guys got free balloons from a photo place. Max and Emmett had a great time at the play area, although at one point Emmett got bowled over by a bigger kid (by accident) which resulted in some tears. He quickly rebounded.

Back at our home (away from home) there was of course a lot of matchbox/hotwheels play, with quotes from the movie left and right. Later, while Bek went out to work on poetry, I got the guys to help me clean a floor fan. We removed the front and back grills and took them outside, dumped water on them and then I took a sponge to it. That led to a lot of cleaning-related play, including trying to stop the "river" that had been created by the water we'd dumped on the fan grills. They tried dumping more water on it. They tried dumping soapy water on it. Then just dish soap. The one big sour note occurred when Emmett did something to Max's balloon, resulting in the balloon separating from its string (and teddy bear weight) and floating up into the sky. As you can imagine there were voluminous tears that took a while to quell. Ice cream helped.

Rediscovering Laundromats

One thing that this trip has taught me is that it was a mistake to stop going to the laundromat. Having a washer and dryer in your house can be nice, but it takes ridiculous amounts of time to actually do laundry that way. Even though it is convenient, you still have to be around to get it done and you can only do one load at a time. We have a terrible problem keeping up with the laundry as a result. In a laundromat you can do all your laundry at once, do it quickly, and when you're done there are large tables that make it easy to fold all that clothes. Plus you don't do the maintenance. Maybe we'll change our minds, but for now at least, I think when we get home we'll be going to the laundromat again. I don't think we'll stop using the home washer/dryer, but when the laundry gets out of hand, and it always does, we'll make a trip to the laundromat.

Iowa Photo Journal 7: Too Hot For The Playground?

Today was easily the hottest and most humid day of all. The perfect day to finally walk to the downtown area. ??? But that is exactly what we did. We intended to go to The Java House again, and to go to the nearby playground and fountain. The 7th entry in the Iowa photo journal, Too Hot For The Playground?, documents the day's events. It mostly wiped us out for the rest of the day, but it was a load of fun.

Iowa Photo Journal 6: More Of The House

The 6th entry in the Iowa photo journal, titled More Of The House, offers more shots of the house and surroundings, including the (mysteriously missing from the first set of house photos) front of the house.

In The Bag

We made a trip to the Prarie Lights Bookstore to get coffee (also "Java House" stuff) and, to appease the boys, they were to both pick one book to buy. One of the books they chose was a Cars (the film) related (promoting) title, which they've really taken to. I keep hearing them using phrases from the book while playing. They were outside today and Emmett kept saying, "he's got it in the bag". Other times they've been saying, "no tires, just gas!" and "he's got to get to California - and fast!" The latter is particularly applicable for Emmett, because he has always, when refering to something far away, said that it was in California. Of course, as planned by Disney, they are now interested in seeing the movie too. We are out of the loop so I didn't know it had already been playing. We're going to have to take them to see it soon, but I'm not sure if Emmett will make it through - the loud racing sounds may do him in.

Iowa Photo Journal 4 & 5

I've decided it would be more fun if I could get the photos out the same day, so I'm cutting back on my work load by no longer including full-resolution photo sets and using fewer words - the pictures will tell the story for the most part. As such I've got two new photo journal entries: Around Town and, from today, Dirty Laundry. Enjoy!

Greetings From Iowa

I ordered a little gizmo that is for plugging an unpowered microphone into your computer. It acts as a pre-amp for it. I had one, but it wasn't working well. Max, Emmett and I tested out the new one, in recording this greeting for our readers. It seems to work!

Iowa Photo Journal 3: Registering

Here's the third Iowa Photo Journal entry, Registering.

June 12, 2006. Our first task was to get Bek registered for her class. In a snafu, she wasn’t registered yet for real, and this was a source of stress. [...]

Iowa Photo Journal 2: Going

It really ought to have been first, but it comes second. I wanted to get those pictures of the house out there. Anyway, the second installment of the photo journal is online, titled Going. Make sure you click the "Continued...".

June 10-11, 2006. As usual we got out the door ridiculously late, leaving Catonsville around 11:30 AM. I have no idea how we packed all that stuff in the car. [...]

The Journal

I've created an overall web site for what will be a series of photo journals from our Iowa trip, the first of which I wrote about below. I call it the Iowa Photo Journal.

Iowa Photo Journal 1: Around The House

Max, Emmett and I played frisbee at our apartment, a house that proved to be the oldest one in Iowa City, originally a hotel, and rumor has it that it might, possibly, maybe have once been a brothel and/or a stop on the “underground railroad”. I don’t know about all that, but it is definitely old and full of “character”. It isn’t full of much furniture, though. It has a nice little backyard to play in, as attested to by these photos.

The Stash - Truth and Consequences

The blog has been going unupdated because, of course, it's been a little crazy in the past week or so as we ready for our trip, but that also brings me to this....

I mentioned in the past my love of a tasty little chocolate wafer. Not having another source for them but the "GEWA" store at work, I realized I was going to be without my daily fix for quite some time. I seriously thought about going to the GEWA and buying their entire supply - probably around 40 packs at the moment (at 45 cents a pack that's $18), but I couldn't do it. It's what I really wanted to do, but I embarrass easily, it seems. Which is really pretty stupid, because what I did do was buy 5 packs of them, and I still had to explain myself because this was noticably different from my normal purchase each day. Why not, then, buy the entire box? Going back now to buy the rest would require further explanation. This is just not something I can do.

So, five packs. One for today and, I thought, one for each of us for the road. Max, Emmett, Bek and me. Well, really, I thought, one for today and one for me for the next four days. I'm not so great a husband or father as you thought. My saving grace is that I get to feeling guilty pretty easily. So one for me for today, and one for each of us on the road tomorrow it is. And I still feel guilty. Once thought, you can't unthink it. So five packs. One gone already. One for Bek. One for Max. One for Emmett. One for me. And one confessional post for all.
