Java House - How Do I Love Thee?
Let me count the ways:
Followup: Max says, about "Some Dogs Do": Sid (the main dog in the book) gets sadder and sadder each time he tells other dogs how he flew to school and they don't believe him. First he says to them, "'But I did', said Sid. 'I did. I did.'" Then he says "'But I did', said Sid. 'I did'" Then he says "'But I did', said Sid.". Finally he doesn't say anything at all. In the end he goes home sadly, and tells his Dad only, "Dogs don't fly." Then his Dad says he has a secret, and that secret, as Sid sees, is that he can fly! Seeing that, Sid becomes happy again and flies again too!
- Great cappuccino - there is nothing even nearly this good back home, at least not that I've found. I'm really going to miss it! Starbucks? Cough! - Cough!
- Great coffee made in a great fashion (individually brewed via Melita-type manual drip brewers) which also allows them to offer a large number of types/blends of brewed coffee to choose from
- Great pastries
- A couple great children's books our boys love to read every time we go ("Some Dogs Do" and "Cat and Mouse - A Delicious Tale"). "Some Dogs Do" was immediately appealing and we've since sought and read other books by its author, Jez Alborough. "Cat and Mouse" wasn't as immediately appealing, but it has grown on me wildly and now I like it perhaps just as much. Some very funny illustrations in a more weighty than "Some Dogs Do" but still fun story. Both books are great.
- Checkers and crayons! These plus the books make our boys want to go, and enough can not be said about having your kids want to let you go get great cappuccino. They also have chess, scrabble and some other games.
- Free wireless network. Admittedly this is conceptual for me as I haven't actually used it so far, but free is obviously much better than not free
- Just about the perfect distance from our Brown Street house for my morning fast walk. Well, I don't do this enough, but when I do it's great. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes each way, and what a motivator!

The Java House was started as a student project. The entrepreneurship program at the UI helped fund it and it took off right away and ended up being a great investment. The Java House locations were the only coffee shops in the IC area until a couple years ago when House of Aromas (another student project) opened and then (gasp) Starbucks showed up.
To be fair to Starbucks, though, Starbucks has Java House whipped, and easily, when it comes to iced tea. Black iced tea. You can't get a regular black iced tea at Java House, only a fruity abomination called "Tropical Iced Tea". Starbucks' black iced tea is actually very good, at least if you order it unsweetened. Put real sugar in it. Is there some better source of black iced tea in Iowa City?
House of Aromas (on Clinton just north of Starbucks) has lots of teas but I'm not sure if any of them are iced and ready to go like the Tropical Iced Tea at Java House is, but I'm sure they'd be willing to chill it out for you. There's usually a little binder with the tea selections up by the register. I love the white teas there too.
There's also a fairly new place called the Apothecary (505 E Washington - at the Bradley Center) that is all about tea so they might have something good too.
